Days 1 to 3
Swelling is normal and usually peaks around day two, often across the forehead. You sleep slightly elevated, take the prescribed medication, and do not touch the recipient area.
Days 4 to 10
Scabs form and then fall away. Your first wash happens at the clinic, where you are also shown how to do it at home. By day ten most people are back to routine and, with short hair, no longer obviously post-surgery.
Month 1: the shedding phase
Transplanted hairs fall out. This alarms almost everyone and it is entirely expected — the follicle stays in place and enters a resting phase. Nothing has failed.
Month 4
New growth starts. It comes in fine and slightly wiry at first, and unevenly across the scalp, which is normal.
Month 6
The result becomes visible to other people. This is usually the point where patients stop styling around the area.
Months 10 to 12
Full thickness. Hair calibre matures and the texture matches the rest of your hair. This is the month for the comparison photograph.
