Hair Transplant Side Effects: What Is Normal, What Is Not

Swelling, scabs, itching and shedding are expected. Spreading redness, pus or fever are not. A clear guide to the first weeks after surgery.

Scalp healing after a hair transplant
Key takeaways
  • Swelling, redness, scabs, itching and mild numbness are normal and temporary.
  • Shedding of transplanted hair in weeks 2–6 is expected — the follicle stays alive.
  • Call your clinic for spreading redness, pus, fever or severe pain.
  • Most risks fall sharply with a qualified surgeon, a proper OT and good aftercare.

Almost every patient worries about something in the first fortnight. Most of it is completely normal healing. Knowing what to expect makes the wait far easier.

Normal and temporary

  • Swelling of the forehead, often peaking on day two or three and settling within a week.
  • Redness in the recipient area, fading over two to four weeks (longer in fair skin).
  • Scabs around each graft that soften and fall away by day 7–10 with correct washing.
  • Itching in the second week as the skin heals — do not scratch.
  • Numbness or tingling that gradually returns to normal.
  • Shock loss — transplanted hairs falling out between weeks two and six. The follicle remains.

Less common, usually manageable

Small pimple-like bumps (folliculitis) as new hairs push through around months two to four, mild temporary thinning of nearby native hair, and a slightly visible donor area if hair is cut very short. These are treated simply when reviewed early.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal for transplanted hair to fall out?

Yes. Shock loss in the first weeks is expected; the follicles remain and regrow from about month three.

How long does numbness last after a hair transplant?

Mild numbness in the donor or recipient area usually fades over a few weeks to a few months.

Can a hair transplant cause infection?

Infection is uncommon with sterile technique and good aftercare. Spreading redness, pus or fever should be checked promptly.
